본 연구의 목적은 한국 프로야구(KBO) 구단의 비용 효율성을 DEA(자료포락분석)와 SFA(확률변경분석)를 통해 분석하고 그 결정요인을 살펴보고자 함이다. 본 연구에서는 8개 구단을 대상으로 2003년부터 2022년까지의 20개년도 자료를 활용하여, 시계열을 반영한 DEA 윈도우 분석과 SFA의 확률변경함수 검정을 통해 각 구단의 비용효율과 그 영향요인을 살펴보았다. 실증결과, 한국 프로야구 구단들의 비용 효율성이 높지 않지만, 대체로 개선되고 있는 경향이 나타났다. 그 중 구장의 규모와 승리 횟수가 비용 효율성에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 반면, 신축 구장과 자유계약선수 영입 수는 비용 효율성에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 두 방법을 통해 도출된 효율성 값의 차이가 상당히 크게 나타나는데 이는 확률오차로 인한 것으로 외부 충격에 상당히 민감함을 의미한다. 이렇게 외부충격에 크게 반응하는 구단들이 많은 것은 구단들의 자생력이 부족하여 모기업과 지자체의 지원이 구단의 지속 가능성에 크게 영향을 준다는 것을 시사한다. 코로나19 이후 새로운 경쟁 환경에 직면해 있는 한국 프로야구 구단들이 자립성을 높이기 위해서는 외부의 긍정적인 지원과 지자체와의 협력 뿐만 아니라 보다 양질의 문화 콘텐츠 창출과 다양한 수익원 발굴 등 건실한 기업으로 거듭나기 위한 끊임없는 노력이 필요하다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the cost efficiency of Korean professional baseball(KBO) teams through Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis(SFA) and to examine its determinants.. In this study, we used 20 years of data from 2003 to 2022 for eight teams to examine the cost efficiency and its influencing factors of each team through DEA window analysis and SFA reflecting the time series. The empirical results showed that the cost efficiency of KBO teams is not high, but it is generally improving. Among them, the size of the stadium and the number of wins have a positive effect on cost efficiency, while the number of new stadiums and free agents has a negative effect on cost efficiency. In particular, the difference between the efficiency values derived from the two methods is quite large, which means that it is highly sensitive to external shocks due to the probable error. The fact that many teams react greatly to external shocks suggests that the support of parent companies and local governments greatly affects the sustainability of the teams due to the lack of self-reliance of the teams. In order to increase the self-reliance of KBO teams facing a new competitive environment after COVID-19, continuous efforts are needed to transform into solid companies, including positive external support and cooperation with local governments, as well as creating higher-quality cultural content and discovering diverse sources of revenue.
