Forever trapped in the cage of “self” : Ichiro Nagano's bitter experience

In his works, Natsume Soseki, known as the “great national writer”, gave a detailed and profound description of the life and spiritual world of the intellectuals in the Meiji period, and depicted a vivid image of the Meiji intellectuals. In “Pedestrian”, Suishi portrays Ichiro Nagano, who is obsessed with his ego and seeks absolute love without success. Based on the works, this paper examines the character image of Ichiro Nagano, an intellectual in the Meiji period, and identifies Ichiro's sadness in the predicament of “self” by exploring his mental state independent of his family members, aiming to explore the inner world of the depressed, struggling intellectuals and their lonely, sad and angry life experience under the special background of the Meiji era.
