Mathematical Formalism: the Bildungsroman of Matter

본 논문은 문학연구 분야에 있어 수학적 형식주의라 불리는 비평적 접근법을 피타고라스, 칸트, 코울리지, 조지 불, 어거스트 드 모건, 안드리아 핸더슨, 폴 드만을 경유하여 검토한다. 검토의 중심에 있는 것은 칸트다. 칸트의 미학은 수학적 형식주의에 있어 가장 중요한 참조점이다. 문학연구 방법론으로서 수학적 형식주의는 칸트의 미학적 형식이 수학적이라는 것에서 출발한다. 본 논문은 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아간다. 본 논문의 주장은 칸트에게는 두 가지 다른 수학, 즉, 직관주의 및 형식주의 수학이 있으며, 직관주의 수학에 내재된 한계로 인해 칸트가 형식주의 수학을 도입하게 된다는 점을 이해해야 수학적 형식주의의 본질이 무엇인지 분명해진다는 것이다. 직관주의 수학의 한계는 직관의 선험적 틀에 기반한 이유로 물질 자체가 지닌 경험주의적 작인을 고려하지 못한다는 데 있다. 칸트는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 제3 비판서에서 미학의 형태로 형식주의 수학을 개진하게 된다. 직관주의에서 형식주의 수학으로의 이러한 이행은 물질의 빌둥스로만이라고 할 만한 순간을 전경화한다. 이 점에 있어, 칸트의 제3 비판서가 제공하는 미학의 수학적 형식을 단순히 정태적으로만 이해하는 수학적 형식주의와 달리, 본 논문은 칸트의 제3 비판서가 제시하는 형식주의 수학을 물질 내부로부터 형식주의 수학이 발생하는 순간으로서 포착하고자 한다.

This essay examines what is known as mathematical formalism in the field of literary studies by providing a set of referneces from Pythagoras, Kant, Coleridge, Geoerge Boole, Augustus de Morgan, Andrea Henderson to Paul de Man. As varied as it seems, the center of the referential set is Kant. Kant’s aesthetics is one crucial reference in mathematical formalism. Mathematical formalism’s justification for its use of mathematics in the field of art is that Kantian aesthetic form is mathematical. This essay takes one step further from there. I argue that mathematical formalism reveals its true nature when we see that in Kant, there are two different types of mathematics, intuitive and formalist mathematics, and the former gives way to the latter due to its inherent limitations. The limitations of intuitive mathematics is that as it is based on the a priori framework of intuition, it does not allow for the empirical agency of matter. Kant solves the issue by formulating formalist mathematics in his third critique. This transition from intuitive to formalist mathematics makes a case for what can be called the Bildungsroman of matter: unlike mathematical formalism’s static understanding of Kant’s third critique, this essay’s approach captures the moment of formalist mathematics’s emergence from within matter.
