루드비히 티크의 ｢요정들｣을 통해 읽는 ‘타자’와 ‘환대’의 문제

Reading Ludwig Tieck’s The Fairies: Focusing on the Problem of the ‘other’ and ‘Hospitality’

이 글은 일차적으로 ｢요정들｣의 작품에 등장하는 ‘타자들’의 존재를 읽어내며, 둘째로는 그 과정을 통해 ‘환대’를 어떻게 이해할 수 있을지에 대한 논의를 진행한다. 즉 이 글의 목적은 특정 작품에 대한 적절한 해석을 제시하는 데 있지 않다. 그보다 이 글은 티크의 ｢요정들｣이라는 텍스트가 오늘날 타자와 환대에 관해 일정한 사유를 가능하게 해준다는 인식에서 출발하며, 작품의 의미구조를 분석하는 과정을 통해 그 인식의 일면을 길어내 보이고자 시도한다. ｢요정들｣에서 타자는 어른의 타자로서의 ‘아이-타자’, 인간의 타자로서의 ‘요정-타자’, (남성적) 세계의 타자로서의 ‘(여성적) 타자-세계’라는 총 세 층위에서 논해질 수 있다. 아이-타자와 여성-타자는 이 작품에서 타자적 세계를 만나는 존재로 묘사된다. 그들은 경계에 대한 물음과 관련해 전형적으로 낭만적 감수성을 지닌 인물들이다. 하지만 그들은 결국 죽음으로 이르게 되며, 마르틴과 그의 사위, 즉 남성 주인공들은 본래 자신들이 살던 마을로 돌아간다. 이 결론을 어떻게 읽느냐와 관련해 타자에 대한 환대의 문제를 환기할 수 있는데, 환대는 ‘환대할 수 없는 것의 환대’이기 때문이다. 작품에서 타자 세계와 접촉한 타자적 존재들이 죽음으로 이르는 현상을, 타자를 배제하는 방식으로 세상을 꾸리는 당대 근대적 세계관의 폭력성을 환기해주는 서사구조로 읽어볼 수 있는 것이다. 낭만주의는 혼란(타자)의 제거가 아니라 혼란과 질서 구분 이전의 ‘혼란’을 탐한다.

This article reads the existence of ‘others’ that appear in The Fairies and discusses how ‘hospitality’ can be understood through this process. This article starts with the recognition that Tieck’s text enables us to think about the other and hospitality today, and attempts to extend that recognition by analyzing the work’s semantic structure. In The Fairies, the other can be discussed on three levels: the ‘child-other’ as the other of adults, the ‘fairy-other’ as the other of humans, and the ‘(feminine) other-world’ as the other of the (masculine) world. The child-other and the female-other are depicted as beings who encounter the other world. They are characters who typically possess a romantic sensibility in relation to questions about boundaries. However, they eventually die, and Martin and his son-in-law, the male protagonists, return to the village where they originally came from. In relation to how to read this conclusion, we can raise the issue of hospitality toward the others because hospitality is ‘hospitality of what cannot be welcomed.’ The phenomenon of the other beings coming into contact with the other world and ending in death can be read as a narrative structure that reminds us of the violence of the modern worldview that organizes the world by excluding the other.
