Evaluation and Impact of Kim Hwang-won's 'long fortress wall and the vast field'

본고는 고려시대 김황원이 부벽루에서 지은 ‘長城一面溶溶水, 大野東頭點點山’이라는 聯에 대한 역대의 평가와 그에 영향을 받은 작품에 대해 탐구한 글이다. 김황원의 일화는 고려시대 이인로의 『파한집』에서 처음보이며, 조선시대의 서거정을 거쳐 조선 말기의 김택영에 이르기까지 많은 사람들이 평가하였다. 이 중에는 긍정적인 평가도 있고 부정적인 평가도 존재한다. 긍정적인 평가를 내린 사람들의 경우 ‘絶唱’, ‘盡之’, ‘佳’ 등의 비교적 단편적이고 감상적인 평가를 내린 경우가 많았으며, 부정적인 평가를 내린 사람들의 경우 자신의 문학관에 비추어 비교적 자세한 분석을 바탕으로 비평을 한 경우가 많았다. 영향을 받은 작품들의 경우 세 종류로 분류해 볼 수 있었다. 첫째, 이 聯을 직접적으로 이용하여 시를 짓는 경우는 이 聯을 작품의 일부로 수용하여 작가의 작품을 덧붙이는 형태로 작성되었다. 둘째, 동일한 어휘나 이미지를 사용한 경우에는 동일한 시어나 의경을 작품에 사용하여 창작되었다. 셋째, 김황원의 일화를 이용하는 경우가 있었다. 김황원의 작품과 일화는 여러 시인들에게 감동과 창작의 동기를 제공하였다는 점에서 미완성일지라도 매우 가치있는 작품이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다.

This paper explores the historical evaluations of the couplet “One side of long fortress wall, the rippling water; At the eastern end of the vast field, the dotted mountains” written by Kim Hwang-won at Bubyeongnu Pavilion during the Goryeo Dynasty, as well as works influenced by it. The anecdote of Kim Hwang-won first appears in Yi In-ro's Pahanjip during the Goryeo Dynasty and was subsequently evaluated by many, including Seo Geo-jeong in the Joseon Dynasty and Kim Taek-young in the late Joseon period. Among these evaluations, there are both positive and negative assessments. Those who gave positive evaluations often provided relatively brief and sentimental remarks, such as “a masterpiece,” “exquisite,” or “beautiful,” while those who offered negative evaluations tended to present more detailed critiques based on their literary perspectives. The works influenced by this couplet can be categorized into three types. First, there are cases where the couplet was directly used to create poems, incorporating it as part of the work and adding the author’s own contributions. Second, there are cases where the same vocabulary or imagery was used, employing similar diction or scenes in the creation of new works. Third, there are cases where Kim Hwang-won’s anecdote itself was utilized. Despite being unfinished, Kim Hwang-won’s work and anecdote can be considered highly valuable as they inspired and motivated many poets.
