변화하는 시대와 자유교육의 이념

The Ideas of Liberal Education in Changing Times

이 논문은 급변하는 시대, 특히 4차 산업혁명과 인공지능 시대의 사회적 변화를 배경으로 자유교육의 이념에 대해 고찰한다. 산업혁명 이후 자유교육의 이념을 설파한 뉴먼(John H. Newman)과 밀(J. S. Mill) 이래 자유교육과 실용교육의 구분이 듀이(John Dewey)를 거쳐 20세기를 통해 미국에서 어떻게 재해석, 재구성되고 있는지 살펴본다. 특히 그러한 자유교육의 성격을 재구성하여 실용적 자유교육의 중요성과 더불어 학습성과와 평가방식에서의 변화를 역설하는 미국대학교육협회(AAC&U)의 관점이 어떤 의미에서 변화하는 시대에 전통적인 자유교육의 이념이 여전히 유효하다는 것을 확인할 수 있게 해주는지 논의한다.

This paper examines the ideas of liberal education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution as well as artificial intelligence where technological breakthrough brings about socio-economic changes. The modern ideas of liberal education were propounded by such important thinkers as John H. Newman and J. S. Mill in the course of the previous Industrial Revolution. This paper explores how their ideas underwent reinterpretation and reconstruction in the 20th century. In particular, it discusses how the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) emphasizes the importance of practical liberal education along with newly proposed learning outcomes and their assessment tools. It reaffirms that the traditional ideas of liberal education are still valid in these ever changing times.
