Purpose - This study aimed to identify the device/media aspects (the importance of smartphones, online video platforms, SNS) and usability aspects (communication and relationships of SNS, usefulness of news) that affect the adolescent self-regulation of media usage. Design/Methodology/Approach - To verify the hypotheses of this study, data from “Tweens’ and Teens’ Media Use in Korea 2022” was utilized from the Korea Press Foundation on 2,052 adolescents with experience using smartphones, online video platforms, and SNS activities. This study was analyzed using SPSS to demonstrate the effect through regression analysis. Findings - This study found that the importance of smartphones and online video platforms negatively affected the self-regulation of media usage. Additionally, the communication and relationships of SNS negatively impact self-regulation of media usage. However, the importance of SNS and the usefulness of news have a positive effect on the self-regulation of media usage. Research Implications - The results of this study have significant academic implications because of various media. Furthermore, this study suggests that device/media aspects and usability should be managed separately, given that the importance of SNS and the communication/relationships of SNS have the opposite effect on the self-regulation of media usage. Since the perceived usefulness of news positively influences the self-regulation of media usage, this study proposes policies to encourage adolescents to use useful media and content. Consequently, the results of this study are expected to extend academic research and social issues on the appropriate usage of media by adolescents.
