Purpose - This study aimed to understand the conceptual and empirical inconsistencies associated with knowledge withholding in online knowledge sharing systems, such as social network services and online information sharing systems (naver cafe, daum cafe, facebook, etc.). Design/Methodology/Approach - Based on a systematic literature review, we examine and discuss theoretical backgrounds, antecedents, and methodological choices related to related research with knowledge sharing and knowledge hiding by reviewing papers, develop a study on the relationships between knowledge withholding, knowledge sharing experience, enjoyment in helping others, knowledge self-efficacy, reward, and perceived importance. We use collected data from 207 users, and structural equation model analysis was conducted. Findings - The results show that the knowledge sharing experience and enjoyment in helping others were positively related to knowledge sharing self-efficacy. It also suggests that the knowledge sharing experience is positively related to knowledge sharing importance recognition, while enjoyment in helping others is not. Self-efficacy, importance recognition, and reward in knowledge sharing have a statistically significant effect on knowledge withholding. Research implications - From empirical test results, we confirmed the relationships between knowledge withholding and self-efficacy, rewards, and importance recognition in knowledge sharing in perspective. Furthermore, this study provided the in-depth practical understanding that people prefer to withhold knowledge instead of knowledge sharing with others.
