성인 애독자의 독서 전략으로서의 병렬 독서에 대한 탐색 - 개념과 실천 기제를 중심으로

Parallel Reading as a Strategy Among Avid Adult Readers － Exploring Concepts and Practical Mechanisms

본 연구에서는 여러 권의 책을 바꾸어 가며,동시적으로 읽는 ‘병렬 독서’ 양상에 주목하여 병렬 독서를 수행하는 사람들이 많아진 환경적 변화를 정리하고,이론적 탐색을 통해 병렬 독서의 개념을 규명하였다.실제로 성인 애독자들을 대상으로 병렬 독서수행 여부,동시에 읽는 책을 선정하는 이유 및 기준,병렬 독서에 대한 의견 등을 질문하여 그 응답을 분석하였다.본 연구의 성인 애독자들 중 과반수 이상이 병렬 독서를 수행한다고 응답하였다.평소에 병렬 독서를 하는 편이라고 응답한 사람들이 ‘항상’ 병렬 독서를 채택하는 것은 아니고 독서 상황에 따라 선택적으로 채택하고 있었다.병렬 독서를 하는 기제는 다음과 같다.첫째,독서 행위 그 자체를 지속하기 위해특정한 책에 집중하거나 몰입할 수 없는 상황에서 독서의 중단 대신 다른 책으로 옮겨가는 양상을 확인하였다.둘째,독자들의 자기주도성 발현과 관련되는데 애독자들이가용할 수 있는 시공간과 독서 목적에 가장 적합한 책을 각각 선택하여 읽는 과정에서병렬독서가 나타났다.마지막으로 일부 애독자들은 독자 중심의 상호텍스트성을 확장하기 위한 실천으로 병렬 독서를 선택하고 있었다.

This study investigates the phenomenon of “parallel reading,” where a single reader engages with multiple books in an overlapping, sequential manner. The proliferation of digital platforms that provide book recommendations, reviews, and reading logs has facilitated easier access to information on a wide range of books, influencing shifts in reading behaviors. Furthermore, the availability of both print and digital formats has encouraged readers to begin new books before completing those in progress. This study explores the environmental factors driving the rise of parallel reading and presents a refined conceptual framework for understanding this practice. A survey of avid adult readers assessed their engagement in parallel reading, underlying motivations and criteria for choosing multiple books, and their perspectives on the practice. The results indicate that over half of the respondents engaged in parallel reading, with readers adapting their reading strategies to suit different contexts.
