A Study on the Representation of North Korea in American Films During Kim Jong-il’s Reign

본 논문은 김정일 집권기에 만들어진 미국영화를 대상으로 미국영화 속 북한 표상을 분석한 연구의 결과물이다. 본 논문을 통해 필진은 연구의 시간적 범주를 김정일집권기로 확대하면서도 이를 다시 1990년대까지와 2000년대 이후로 구분함으로써, 분석의 정확성과 구체성을 더욱 높이고자 하였다. 그리하여, 다음과 같은 연구 결과가도출되었다. 먼저, ‘선군정치’를 표방한 채 김정일 체제가 구축되어 가던 1990년대 후반부터 미국영화는 북한에 대한 미국(인)의 현재적 인식을 반영하기 시작하였다. 그리하여 영화 속에 테러 지원국으로서의 북한의 실제 및 가상의 풍경과 당국의 지령을받아 활동하는 북한 공작원의 모습 등이 보다 다채롭게 그려졌다. 다음으로, 남북정상회담과 9.11테러 등 일련의 사건을 거치며 미국영화 속에 현재의 북한(인)이 등장하는 경우가 더욱 많아졌다. 아울러, 북한인 캐릭터가 보다 다양해졌음은 물론이고 영화속에 북한 체제의 내부 분열의 가능성이 포함되기도 하였다. 그러나 한편으로는 오랫동안 쌓여온 북한에 대한 고정적 인식 또한 자리하고 있었다.

In this paper, we analyzed the representation of North Korea in American films made during Kim Jong-il’s reign. In order to increase the accuracy and specificity of the analysis, we expanded the temporal category of the study to the period of Kim Jong-il’s rule and divided the period into the 1990s and after the 2000s. As a result, we obtained the following research results. First, from the late 1990s, when the Kim Jong-il regime, which advocated ‘military-first politics,’ was being established, American films began to reflect Americans’ current perception of North Korea. As a result, the real and imagined scenes of North Korea as a state sponsoring terrorism and the scenes of North Korean agents operating under orders from the authorities were portrayed in a variety of ways in the films. Next, following the inter-Korean summit and the September 11 terrorist attacks, the number of current North Koreans appearing in American films have increased. In addition, North Korean characters became more diverse, and the possibility of internal division in the North Korean system was presented in the films. On the other hand, there was also a fixed perception of North Korea that had been accumulated for a long time.
