A Study of Sentence Processing by Advanced Learners Based on the Adverbial Case Marker ‘-(으)로’: Focusing on Scrambled Word Order and Case Marker Omission
The present study examines the online sentence processing of the Korean adverbial case marker ‘-(eu)ro’ with a particular emphasis on the functional differences of word order and constraints from case markers between semantic roles. We conducted a self-paced reading analysis of 336 sentences with 27 native and 27 advanced (L2) speakers of Korean. Native speakers took longer to process non-canonical word orders, whereas advanced learners had no significant differences in processing speed. The results revealed that native speakers used both word order and case marker information more effectively, but proficient learners did not use these cues strategically. The greatest processing dissociation was found between the ‘cognitive’ and the ‘destination’ functions, confirming that the ‘cognitive’ function is seen as more restricted.
