본 연구는 2005년부터 2024년 상반기까지 국내에서 발표된 K-pop 관련 학술 논문 511편을 대상으로 연구 동향을 분석하였다. 한국학술지인용색인(KCI) 데이터베이스를 활용하여 수집한 논문들을 11개의 주제 범주로 분류하고, 양적·질적 분석을 병행하였다. 연구 결과, K-pop 연구는 2010년대 후반부터 급격히 증가하였으며, 특히 2020년대에 들어 폭발적으로 성장하였다. 주요 연구 주제로는 '텍스트와 재현', '산업과 생산', '교류와 전파', '매개와 순환', '수용과 팬덤' 등이 두드러졌다. 특히 스토리텔링, 트랜스미디어, 디지털 미디어 플랫폼, 국가 이미지, 커버댄스, 지구화와 혼종성 등 K-pop의 특수성을 반영하는 연구 영역이 확대되고 있음을 확인하였다. 그러나 정치경제적 분석, 음반과 굿즈, 공연, 음원과 스트리밍, 규제와 개입, 혐한류와 안티 K-pop 등의 주제는 상대적으로 덜 연구되었다. 또한 K-pop 연구에 기반한 새로운 이론이나 분석틀의 개발이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 K-pop 연구의 현주소를 진단하고, 향후 연구 방향을 제시하였다. K-pop 연구의 질적 도약을 위해 현실 반영성 강화, 학제적 연구 심화, 새로운 이론과 분석틀 개발, 비판적 분석 강화, 장기적 연구 수행, 글로벌 맥락에서의 이해 등이 필요함을 제안하였다.
This study examines the research trends in K-pop studies within South Korea from 2005 to 2024, analyzing 511 academic papers published in Korean journals. The research aims to understand how K-pop studies have developed quantitatively and qualitatively, identify major research themes and their evolution, and suggest future directions for the field. Using a mixed-method approach combining quantitative analysis of publication trends and qualitative content analysis, the study categorizes K-pop research into eleven thematic areas. The findings reveal a significant increase in K-pop research, particularly after 2020, reflecting the global rise of K-pop. The study identifies key research areas such as industry and production, text and representation, global dissemination, media and circulation, and fandom studies. While the research demonstrates the expansion and diversification of K-pop studies, it also highlights several limitations. These include a lack of critical political-economic analyses, insufficient research on certain aspects of the K-pop industry (such as physical albums and merchandise), and a disconnection from broader popular music studies traditions. Moreover, the study notes a scarcity of new theoretical frameworks or analytical models specific to K-pop. The paper concludes by suggesting future research directions, emphasizing the need for more interdisciplinary approaches, development of K-pop-specific theories, and studies addressing current issues in the K-pop industry. This meta-analysis contributes to understanding the academic landscape of K-pop studies and provides insights for its future development in line with K-pop's global cultural significance.
