This paper reviews the research trends of maritime history as currently practiced in the United States. The author proposes that American maritime history is essentially interdisciplinary in nature, with three major divisions: scholarly history, maritime museums, and underwater archaeology. Furthermore, American maritime history is decentralized, with no university, museum, or publication dominating the field.
