The traditional Chinese instrument qin, also called guqin, represents both Chinese philosophy and traditional musical culture and occupies a very important position in Chinese culture. This paper involves the compositional exploration on the application of the Chinese instrument qin to western orchestra in the orchestral work Vagueness. The research question is based on the phenomenon of cultural hybridity. As for the realization of the cultural hybridity, mimesis, which is generally divided into covert and overt mimesis, is significantly discussed. The analytical part demonstrates explicitly the application of covert and overt mimesis in Vagueness. The created general tool of mimesis can be treated as a compositional method to realize a high degree of cultural hybridity for further composition.
