This paper uses the meme theory to discuss the cultural exchange in Chinese English teaching. Meme theory regards cultural information as a self-replication unit. In the context of globalization, the spread of English is closely linked to cultural exchange. This paper reviews the role of memes in crosscultural communication and analyzes the challenges in Chinese English teaching, such as exam-oriented education, urban and rural gap, and inadequate teacher training. These problems hinder the effective dissemination of cultural memes. The paper believes that the meme theory provides a new idea for improving English teaching, and helps to improve students’ cross-cultural communication ability and cultural understanding.
