Emily Dickinson is often characterized as a writer of seclusion and isolation; however, she can be called a poet of conviction and defiance. Her challenge to dominant ideologies is manifest in her critical engagement with various prevailing perspectives, including Christianity, views of nature, and notions of femininity. Perhaps the most explicit form of resistance Dickinson enacted was through her choice to live a life of celibacy and seclusion and it was a deliberate mode of defiance against the social norms, customs, and traditions that shaped her community. Through this life, Dickinson embodied courage and conviction, breaking free from societal expectations and thereby securing the freedom to perceive and interpret the world from her own unique vantage point. Dickinson’s resistance begins with her rejection of monopolization, dogmatism, and absolutism. However, her dissent is rarely articulated explicitly in her poetry. Instead, she reveals her defiance through a complex, ambiguous, and often suggestive poetic style. This nuanced mode of expression can be understood as a form of implied or disguised resistance. In rejecting the monopolization, dogmatism, and absolutism of established norms, Dickinson emphasizes the presence, spontaneity, and inter- connectedness of all beings. Whereas dominant discourses tend to be vertical, normative, and rigidly categorized, Dickinson’s vision is characterized by openness, indeterminacy, and multiplicity. Through this veiled or disguised form of resistance, focusing on the inherent value of reality and the present, she challenges hegemonic narratives and shapes her own existential way based on these principles.
