BACKGOUND In order to properly use and satisfy pharmacy service (PS) under the national health insurance (NHI) system, it is necessary to increase consumer competency by acquiring related knowledge. This study was conducted to investigate the knowledge level and satisfaction of PS utilization and current NHI system of Korean people. METHOD A 22-item questionnaire was used in this survey and Korean adults were recruited during July-August 2021. Difference of knowledge level and satisfaction of PS and NHI, and awareness of pharmacy role in improving public’s knowledge on service utilization and NHI system by respondent characteristics were analyzed. RESULT The average knowledge score of 388 respondents calculated by the correct answer rate out of total 11 questions was 7.0. The most vulnerable knowledge item was that pharmacists did not add profit to the prescription drug price when dispensing (correct answer rate was 28.1%). Satisfaction level calculated by the 5-point Likert scale were 3.6 and 3.7 for PS and NHI system, respectively. Two-thirds had frustrated experience due to ignorance of medical utilization or NHI system. 72.4% were positive for community pharmacy to provide counseling or education on those knowledge information, and it was significantly twice as high in the group with low knowledge score. CONCLUSION We found that the respondents’ knowledge level requiring as medical consumers was not so high and pharmacy’s role to improve such knowledge was positive. Hence, it is hoped that further disucussion will continue on the pharmacist role in strengthening those knowledge for the people.
