BACKGROUND Drug safety information should be provided to anyone, regardless of disability. However, since the safety information of drugs is mainly provided as text, the visually impaired (VI) is placed in the blind spot of access to safety information on drugs. Braille is a major means for the VI to access safety information on drugs, but reports of related status are still insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the status of braille labeling of drugs and the methods of information delivery for VIs. METHODS: Using a scoping review method, a total of 538 related literature was confirmed by combining search terms of drugs and Braille in core databases. Among them, after applying the pre-determined selection/exclusion criteria, the 34 studies were finally selected and analyzed. RESULTS: The final selected studies were conducted in 16 countries including Korea, and the subjects were VI and physicians or pharmacists who had experience communicating with the VI. Many studies have mentioned that VI did not receive adequate information about drug use and that Braille display is necessary for safe drug use. Various methods of providing drug information such as tactile identification marks and pictograms were proposed, and methods of utilizing digital devices and applications, changing packaging and shape of the drug were introduced. CONCLUSION: For the safe use of drugs by the VI, it is necessary to study specific Braille display methods and studies on other information delivery methods of information beyond Braille display.
