Purpose : This study explored nursing students’ learning experiences using ChatGPT and proposed educational strategies for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into future nursing education. Methods : A phenomenological approach based on Colaizzi’s method was used to understand nursing students’ experiences with ChatGPT. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 nursing students from August 1 to September 30, 2024. Colaizzi’s seven-step analysis method was applied. Results : In total, 29 formulated meanings resulted in 12 themes organized into the following 6 theme clusters: “Optimal learning partner”, “An imperfect partner”, “Awareness of decreased critical thinking”, “Concerns about personal information use”, “Doubt about the meaning of learning”, and “Feelings of plagiarism”. These clusters revealed both benefits and limitations of AI as a learning tool, along with ethical concerns. Conclusion : While ChatGPT was recognized as a useful tool for clinical practice and learning, participants expressed concerns about information reliability, diminished critical thinking and self-directed learning, and data privacy issues. The study recommends integrating AI as a supplementary tool in nursing education while emphasizing critical thinking and creativity in its use. Additionally, practical education on data security and privacy should be incorporated into AI-related curricula.
