Parkmunseogwon’s Literary Publications and the Reflection of the Publishing Environment

개화기 박문서관의 문학서 출판은 대중의 계몽과 애국정신의 고취를 목적으로 이루어졌다. 그러나 1910년대가 되면 일제의 출판 통제로 오락과 여가를 위한 영리 위주의 신구소설류 출판이 크게 확대된다. 단 구소설의 출판 경쟁이 심해지자 경성서적업조합은 배타적 출판권 제도를 통해 이에 대한 중복 출판을 통제했다. 조합의 규제를 적용받지 않는 기타 신구소설들은 박문서관 보유 판권 외에 저자, 또는 여러 판권자들의 출판권을 빌려 발행되었다. 신구소설 출판으로 사업의 기초를 닦은 박문서관은 이들 서적의 출판에만 머물지 않고 출판의 다각화를 모색한다. 즉 1920년대부터 지식인들을 위한 고급 문학 시장으로의 진출에 관심을 갖았고 1930년대엔 사회에 공헌하는 양서 출판을 위해 수준 높은 신문예 창작서, 번역ㆍ번안서, 고전류 등을 출판했다. 대중의 경제적 구득력을 고려한 문고본 출판을 통해 고급 문학의 저변을 확대시켰고 문학전집, 아동서, 영화소설 등 다양한 문학서들을 출판했다. 아울러 보성서관을 설립해 새로운 통속 문예서 시장의 개척을 시도하기도 했다.

During the Enlightenment Period, Parkmunseogwan’s publication of literary works aimed at enlightening the public and promoting patriotism. However, by the 1910s, under the control of Japanese colonial rule, the publishing industry shifted towards profit-driven genres, with a significant expansion of new and classical novels aimed at entertainment and leisure. Particularly, as competition for publishing classical novels intensified, the Gyeongseong Book Publishers Association controlled the duplication of classical novels through an exclusive publishing rights system. Other new and classical novels, which were not subject to the association’s regulations, were published by borrowing publishing rights from Parkmunseogwan’s holdings, authors, or various copyright holders. Having laid the foundation for its business through the publication of new and classical novels, Parkmunseogwan did not limit itself to this and sought to diversify its publishing activities. In the 1920s, they showed interest in entering the high-end literary market for intellectuals, publishing various translations and new literary works. In the 1930s, they took it as their mission to contribute to society by publishing high-quality translations, adaptations, new literary works, and classical texts. Through the publication of works with consideration for the public’s economic accessibility, Parkmunseogwan expanded the base for high-quality literature and published a wide variety of literary works, including literary anthologies, children’s books, and film adaptations. Additionally, it established Boseong Seogwan to explore and cultivate a new market for popular literary works.
