This study aims to reinterpret the Joseon Dynasty courtesans' hairstyles, known as “tremeris,” as modern upstyles by creating and proposing three upstyle pieces. The goal is to recognize and preserve Korean cultural identity and unique values in the global era by modernizing and reinterpreting upstyle designs. For the research methodology, data was collected from previous research papers, books, and websites to select the tremeris depicted in genre paintings as motifs. The upstyle techniques and the positioning of the head in the tremeris were the main focus for reinterpretation in the creation of the upstyle pieces. Piece 1 is a modern upstyle created based on the tremeri depicted in Shin Yun-bok's genre painting, “Beauties.” Piece 2 is a modern upstyle based on the tremeri shown in Kim Hong-do's genre painting, “Beauties with Makeup.” Piece 3 is a modern upstyle created based on the tremeri from an anonymous late Joseon Dynasty genre painting. This study has confirmed that classic hairstyles can be interpreted in a modern context. It demonstrates that the reinterpretation of traditional hairstyles through upstyle creations can reflect and uphold the national identity and unique values of Korea.
