This study aimed to compare emotional labor and job satisfaction among hairstylists. To accomplish this, a questionnaire survey was conducted with hairdressers from both chain and independent beauty salons in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do between June 1 and June 30, 2024. A total of 563 completed surveys were used for the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation analysis (χ²), independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha, with SPSS 20. All tests were conducted at a 5% significance level. For hairstylists at chain salons, the average (± standard deviation) emotional labor and job satisfaction scores were 3.80 (± 0.517) and 3.25 (± 0.603) respectively. For those at standard hair salons, the scores were 3.62 (± 0.409) and 3.15 (± 0.567) each. The emotional labor and job satisfaction levels at branded salons were higher than those at non-branded salons with statistical significance. Although there was a significant correlation between emotional labor and job satisfaction, the degree of correlation was very low (r=.122)(p<.05). There were no significant differences in emotional labor and job satisfaction based on gender, marital status, or education level. However, emotional labor scores showed a significant difference based on age (F = 3.272, p = .021). Emotional labor was lower for individuals in their 50s compared to those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Significant differences in emotional labor were observed based on job position, workplace size, and working hours. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, showed significant differences based on job position, years of service, and salary.
