A Study on Changes in Population Distribution Following the Establishment of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Megacity : Focusing on Urban Spatial Network Analysis

This study aims to analyze the changes in population distribution across different districts in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam(Bu-Ul-Gyeong) region before and after the establishment of the railway network, utilizing space syntax as the analytical framework. The research methodology involved constructing a spatial network based on the existing road and railway transportation systems in the Bu-Ul-Gyeong region, applying the local integration index to calculate the local integration values for each district, and performing regression analysis with actual population data. In the regression analysis, the population for each district was set as the dependent variable, while the standardized local integration values served as independent variables. The results demonstrated a high explanatory power of 0.545. Using the derived regression equation, the study estimated the changes in population for each district in the Bu-Ul-Gyeong region. Analysis of the changes in population distribution revealed that Busan City experienced a decrease in population, Ulsan City saw a slight increase, while Gyeongnam Province experienced a significant increase. Furthermore, it was observed that the standard deviation of the population distribution among the districts had significantly decreased compared to previous data. This indicates that the establishment of the railway network positively impacts balanced regional development in the Bu-Ul-Gyeong area.
