This study aims to recognize the effectiveness of discourse-integrated writing strategies in the English writing activities of a freshman at the university and the importance of utilizing grammatical elements of passive constructions to enhance writing proficiency. To internalize the strategies of discourse-integrated writing activities, the methods and process of this research include reading activities with group members to verify content knowledge, explicit grammar learning activity for using passive voice, and discourse integration writing activities. The reading strategies for performing the discourse integrated writing tasks were adapted and applied from Plakans’(2009) strategies and for writing activities were modified from the CALLA to present a practical model for students’ writing tasks. Grammatical accuracy was achieved after explicit corrections following the first draft. The results were as follows: Important aspects of discourse-integrated writing activities include the collection of materials, understanding of information, the integration of existing knowledge with new insights, and grammatical accuracy. For learners who had low achievement for writing, the strategies of discourse-integrated writing have significant impact. They have gained the ability to collect and adopt information through reading strategies and fostered an understanding of the comprehensive use of passive constructions rather than their fragmented application.
