The Influence of English Genres and ChatGPT on Korean EFL Learners’ Writing Performance

This study investigates the influence of ChatGPT and specific English genre types— comparative, causal, and argumentative essays—on the writing performance of 25 Korean university students. Participants independently composed essays in each genre and received feedback from ChatGPT for subsequent revisions. Each essay was evaluated based on criteria including 1) thesis statement, 2) idea generation, 3) idea development, 4) idea organization, 5) topic sentence, 6) coherence, 7) lexical diversity, and 8) syntactic complexity. Mean comparisons were conducted using Multivariate Analysis of Variances (MANOVA) using SPSS 24. The MANOVA results revealed significant improvements in coherence, lexical diversity, and syntactic complexity across all genres after using ChatGPT. Genre-specific differences were identified, consistent with existing research on AI-assisted writing. The study highlights ChatGPT's potential to enhance genre awareness and writing enhancement among learners, suggesting its value as an effective pedagogical tool in academic writing instruction.
