An analysis of Business English research trends in Korea: Current status and future directions

This study aims to analyze research trends in Business English in Korea and suggests directions for future studies. Utilizing the KCI and RISS databases, the researcher selected 64 papers published from 2000 to 2024 containing the keyword “Business English,” after excluding duplicates and studies conducted outside of Korea. The study addresses four research questions: 1) What are the trends in the number of Business English-related papers in Korea? 2) What specific topics are explored Business English research in Korea? 3) What research methods are predominantly used in Business English studies in Korea? 4) Do these studies provide pedagogical implications based on their findings? Results indicate that teaching methods are the most frequently researched area, whereas topics like assessment and materials development are less commonly explored. Additionally, Business English research in Korea primarily relies on questionnaires, with literature reviews appearing more often in studies from the early 2000s. Only 42.2% of these studies offered educational implications, while 39.1% were limited to discussing findings or limitations without presenting specific pedagogical insights. The study emphasizes the importance of developing Business English research closely aligned with practical industry demands, aiming to bridge the gap between academic exploration and the skills required in the business field.
