ESP Review Vol.6 No.2.jpg

This study examines the current state of EOP education in junior colleges of Korea to explore potential avenues for improvement. To achieve this, the curricula of the 137 Korean junior colleges were consulted to delineate EOP courses. Additionally, relevant studies were reviewed to identify major issues or points of contention pertinent to the aim of this research, being analyzed based on Basturkmen (2010)’s five points of need analysis. Despite the scarcity of relevant studies, the findings indicate that the current state of EOP practice in junior colleges is closely linked with the distinct characteristics of these institutions, mostly with the targeted occupational groups or tasks and the relatively short program durations. They also suggest that efforts to enhance EOP education should encompass a broad spectrum of students’ needs and their English proficiencies. Finally, this study discusses several practical challenges ranging from needs analysis to the establishment of an EOP curriculum and its implementation.
