A Study on the Development of Dépayment Garments with the Motif of Hanbok and Traditional Jogakbo

Background/Objectives: In the modern fashion market, designs utilizing traditional costume elements are gradually gaining attention. Departing from everyday contexts, the concept of dépaysement places them in new environments. This paper aims to explore the potential fusion of tradition and modernity through a case study that applies traditional elements of Hanbok. The research goal is to develop designs that suggest new directions in fashion design by integrating traditional elements into modern clothing. Methods: Based on theoretical research, the characteristics of dépaysement are analyzed, and recent dépaysement garments are examined. The aesthetic and dépaysement elements of Hanbok are analyzed, and based on this analysis, traditional adaptive costumes that can be applied to dépaysement garments are developed, designing creative attire tailored to modern sensibilities. These designs are presented using CLO software. Results: The research results introduce nine final design outcomes that reinterpret traditional elements of Hanbok in a modern context through the dépaysement of distortion, combination, displacement, and absence, aiming to create unfamiliarity and novelty. These designs attempt to present distinctive attire in contemporary contexts by distorting and combining the familiar attire of Hanbok. Conclusion/Implications: This study is significant in developing refined Westernized garments that reflect global trends while modernizing and globalizing Hanbok. It was possible to create restrained, refined Surrealistic dépaysement garments suitable for everyday wear.
