Background/Objectives: This study was performed to analyze current conditions in the local food market and investigate pesticide residues in agricultural products to address the demands for food safety in Gyeonggi-do. Methods: Local food stores and their sales were analyzed from 2013 to 2023 through surveys of the local food markets in Gyeonggi-do. To monitor food safety, 511 agricultural products purchased at local food stores in Gyeonggi-do from 2023 to the first half of 2024 were tested for 339 pesticide residues by a multi-residue method using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results: Over the past decade, local food markets have expanded within South Korea. Specifically, the number of local food stores, participating farmers, and sales in Gyeonggi-do have increased approximately 17, 23, and 46 fold, compared to 10 years ago. Among the 511 assessed agricultural commodities, 119 samples (97 vegetables, 17 fruits, and 5 root and tuber crops)were found to have residual pesticides within maximum residual limits (MRLs). However, five agricultural products from local food stores exceeded the MRLs. The violative pesticide residues included insecticides (methidathion, buprofezin, and terbufos), a herbicide (dichlorenil), and a fungicide (etridiazole). Conclusion/Implications: As local food markets continue to expand, ongoing monitoring of pesticide residues in locally produced agricultural products is essential to ensure food safety.
