The purpose of this study is to reinterpret the Sabangtakja among the traditional wooden furniture with the aesthetics of the Joseon Dynasty into modern furniture that is suitable for today’s living space and is price competitive. Recreating a tradition to suit modern circumstances requires an understanding of its essence and an analysis of related cases. Therefore, in order to effectively realize the research purpose, this researcher redefines the essence of Sabangtakja through a review of academic papers and literature, and then examines the materials, names of each part, and assembly method. Next, the characteristics are derived through case analysis of Sabangtakja that have been reinterpreted in a modern way by today’s various designers and craftsmen. Based on this, the researcher proposes a modern Sabangtakja designed in a form of reinterpretation that combines traditional, economic, and functional elements. Modern Sabangtakja retains traditional proportions even though the production process has been simplified using digital machines. It is also equipped with lights that can be controlled with a smartphone and can accommodate long objects such as vases. Through this, the researcher hope to help secure various directions for the modernization of traditional wooden furniture.
