Study on the Development Process of Office Furniture Design Using Generative AI

This study investigates the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the office furniture design development process and explores how AI can be utilized to derive final design outcomes. In recent years, the adoption of AI technology in the design industry has gradually expanded as a means to enhance creativity and efficiency. Generative AI, in particular, has emerged as a pivotal tool for design innovation by introducing new possibilities into the design process, reducing repetitive tasks, and enabling rapid prototyping. However, most existing research has focused on AI playing a supportive role in specific stages of the design process, with relatively little in-depth exploration of the comprehensive process where AI and designers collaborate to produce final design outcomes. This study addresses this gap by developing office furniture design using generative AI, aiming to examine its role throughout the design process and to derive creative design results through this collaborative approach. The study encompasses a series of design processes, including initial goal setting, idea generation, formative exploration, functional refinement, and final design implementation of office furniture. It analyzes the role of generative AI at each stage and the decision-making process of human designers. By doing so, this research seeks to evaluate the potential and utility of generative AI in the design development process and provide insights into producing innovative design results through collaboration with generative AI. This study empirically demonstrates the potential of generative AI and designers to achieve creative outcomes through collaboration. Furthermore, it proposes a new creative methodology within the design industry by leveraging generative AI. Through these efforts, the study aims to expand the role of generative AI in the design field and offer practical implications for developing creative processes that utilize this technology.
