이 글은 궁예와 그의 나라를 기억하는 조선시대의 맥락과 양상을 살펴보기 위한 시도이다. 특히 무관심과 관심이라는 ‘양면성’에 주목해보았다. 조선은 기본적으로 후삼국으로부터 시간적으로 제법 격절이 있어, 큰 관심을 두지 않았다. 그럼에도 조선에서는 제법 적지 않은 비중으로 이들이 언급되었던바, 다만 왕실을 비롯한 지식계 일반에서는 기존의 정보에 대한 범상한 답습이 주를 이루고 있었음을 확인하였다. 성리학적 포폄의 논리에서 역시나 전대의 부정적 사평 또한 그대로 따르고 있었다. 이를 역설적 맥락에서 ‘무관심’의 결과로 간주하였다. 이들을 향한 ‘관심’은 오히려 민간 영역에서 활발하였다. 가문의 현창을 위해 역사를 적극적으로 활용한 이들은, 궁예가 천년왕조인 신라의 왕족 출신이면서 동시에 개창자이자 한 나라의 군주였다는 측면에 주목하였다. 자신들의 선대가 왕실의 일원이었다는 것을 내세우기 위하여, 궁예는 일부 가문들로부터 계보 속으로 부름을 받았던 것이다. 일부 전승에서는 궁예와 관련하여 역사 기록에 보이지 않는 사실들이 확인되거니와, 안정복은 출처가 불분명한 ‘궁예국사’의 존재 사실에 강한 관심을 표명하기도 했다. 이처럼 시대의 간극과 더불어, 고려라는 토양으로부터 벗어난 궁예와 그의 나라는 ‘고려 태조를 위한 존숭’이라는 명분으로부터 자유로워짐에 따라 조선시대에 보다 다채로운 인식을 맞이했던 것이다.

This article is an attempt to examine the context and aspects of the Joseon dynasty’s memory of Gungye and his dynasty, focusing on the duality of indifference and interest. Joseon was a period that was quite separated in time from the Later Three Kingdoms. Basically, it is a time when there are remarkably few opportunities to take interest in the history of the Later Three Kingdoms. Nevertheless, they were mentioned quite frequently during the Joseon Dynasty. However, a closer look at the way in which they were mentioned revealed that they were mostly a mediocre repetition of existing factual information. Above all, it was confirmed that the logic of the Neo-Confucian criticism followed the previous negative evaluation. This was regarded as a result of ‘indifference’ in a paradoxical context. Interest in them was rather active in the private sector. Those who actively used history to show off their family lineage noted that Gungye was from the royal family of Silla. And they seem to have shown a strong interest in the aspect that Gungye was the founder and monarch of a country. This appealing explanation that their ancestors were part of a royal family with a long history soon led to Gungye being called by some families. Along with the gap in time, Gungye and his dynasty were freed from the Goryeo name, and thus received a more colorful perception in the Joseon Dynasty.
