신중년의 발달과업 재개념화를 위한 예비적 탐색: 포커스 그룹 토론(FGD)을 중심으로

A Preliminary Exploration for the Reconceptualization of Developmental Tasks in the New Middle Ages: Focusing on Focus Group Discussion (FGD)

본 연구는 신중년의 발달과업을 재개념화하기 위한 예비적 탐색을 목적으로 하였다. 구체적으로 신중년이 직면한 새로운 발달적 도전과 기회를 심층적으로 이해하고, 신중년의 발달과업을 재개념화하기 위하여 총 5인의 연구 참여자로 구성된 포커스그룹토론(FGD)의 연구방법을 적용하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 신중년의 의미는 단순하게 생물학적인 연령으로 이해되기보다는 성공적 노화와 창의적 노화를 경험하고 있는 자를 신중년으로 바라보고 있다는 새로운 시선을 제기하였다. 둘째, 신중년의 삶의 양태가 다양화되었음에 따라 보편적이고 단일한 발달과업을 제시하는 것이 어려워졌으며 발달과업의 연령별 구분이나 경계가 모호해지고 있음을 이야기하였다. 셋째, 그럼에도 불구하고 신중년의 발달과업을 삶을 유능하게 살아가는 역량의 측면에서 고민할 때, 사랑, 여가, 몰입, 봉사와 같은 전생애적이고 인류애적인 발달과업이 새롭게 추출될 필요가 있음을 시사하였다. 본 연구는 신중년에 대해 관심을 갖고 진정한 신중년 시기를 살아가기 위한 지원방안을 논의하고, 이 과정에서 신중년의 발달과업에 대한 예비적 탐색을 해보았음에 의의가 있다.

This study aims to conduct a preliminary exploration to reconceptualize the developmental tasks of the “new middle-aged” generation. Specifically, it seeks to deeply understand the new developmental challenges and opportunities faced by this group. To achieve this, a focus group discussion (FGD) methodology was employed with five participants. The findings of the study are as follows: First, the concept of the “new middle-aged” is not simply understood in terms of biological age but rather as individuals experiencing successful and creative aging, offering a fresh perspective on this life stage. Second, as the lifestyles of the “new middle-aged” diversify, it becomes increasingly difficult to propose universal or singular developmental tasks. This has blurred the traditional age-based distinctions and boundaries of developmental tasks. Third, despite these challenges, the study highlights the necessity of redefining developmental tasks from the perspective of life competencies. Specifically, it identifies universal and altruistic developmental tasks, such as love, leisure, flow, and service, which are relevant across the lifespan. This study contributes by initiating discussions on supporting the “new middle-aged” generation in living a meaningful life and providing a preliminary exploration of their developmental tasks.
