박인환의 미국 체험 시에 나타난 여행자의 정동(情動) 양상 연구

A Study on the Affective Aspects of the Traveler in Park In-hwan's Poems about His American Experience

본고는 박인환의 <아메리카 詩抄>의 13편의 시편들을 통해 미국 여행이 박인환에게 어떤 의미를 지니는 것이었으며, 그것이 박인환의 의식에 충격을 가하고 그의 의식을 변화시키기까지 어떠한 작용을 거치게 되었는지를 이해하는 데 목표를 두고 있다. 이를 밝히기 위해 본 연구에서는 이 시기 박인환이 지녔던 정동(情動)의 양상을 살피고 그것이 어떻게 인식론적인 차원에까지 영향을 미치게 되는지를 확인하고자 한다. 정동(affect)은 감정이나 정서와 유사하지만 그보다 더 즉각적으로 신체가 경험하는 감각적인 반응에 기반한다. 정동은 본능적이고 무의식적인 반응으로서 특정 상황에 놓여질 때의 순간적이고 언어화되기 이전의 반응태에 해당한다. 의식화되기 이전의 혹은 인지되거나 규정되기 이전의 감각적 반응은 일차적으로 신체의 반응이며 이전의 기억과 학습에 의존하는 전(前)경험적 반응이기도 하다. 이는 신체의 반응이 즉각적이되 집단적, 사회적으로 발생하는 것을 의미한다. 이때 신체는 주체가 마주해야 했던 집단적이고 사회·문화·정치적인 제 현상을 기억하고 저장하는 장소로서의 지대에 해당한다. 박인환의 <아메리카 詩抄>를 정동의 측면에서 고찰하고자 하는 것은 이들 시가 박인환의 최초의 미국 방문을 통해 이루어진 것이라는 점에 기인한다. 미국이라는 낯선 장소에 던져졌을 때 박인환이 그 속에서 느꼈을 즉각적이고 직접적인 감각은 박인환의 최초의 신체적 반응에 따른 것으로, 그때의 강렬하고 선명했을 감각이야말로 박인환이 미국 체험을 통해 얻게 된 정동의 내용이라 할 만하다. 박인환에게 미국 여행은 이러한 정동의 운동을 매우 극적이고 선명하게 체험할 수 있는 기회로 작용하였다. 박인환은 낯선 미국에 처하면서 자신의 감각과 감정, 의식이 모두 격변하는 경험을 하기에 이른다. 해방기의 혼란과 6.25 전쟁을 고스란히 겪어내야 했던 박인환에게 미국을 여행하는 일은 큰 설레임이자 일종의 탈출의 기회로서 작용하였다. 따라서 미국에 도달하기 전 태평양에서 그가 체험했던 것은 이전에 낙인처럼 지니고 있던 불안과 허무의식으로부터의 자유와 해방을 향한 의지의 정동이었음을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 미국에 당도했을 때 그는 미국의 문화적 현상들을 어떠한 제한이나 경계 없이 받아들이게 된다. 그것은 길지 않은 시간 동안 미국을 온전히 이해하고자 하는 태도에 따른 것이다. 미국도시의 문화는 처음 박인환에게 혼란과 불쾌감을 안겨주지만 그곳의 사람들과 만나고 일상을 나누면서 박인환은 자신이 알고 있던 미국의 다른 모습을 알게 되는 계기를 얻는다. 결국 박인환은 미국이 ‘혼란과 질서’라는 양면성을 지니고 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되고 미국과 한국의 차이를 인식하며 고국으로 향하게 된다. 이때의 박인환이 ‘행복’을 말하고 있음은 미국 체험이 그에게 어떠한 정동적 효과를 일으켰는지를 짐작하게 해주는 대목이다.

This study aims to understand what the American journey meant to Park In-hwan and how it shocked and transformed his consciousness, focusing on 13 poems from his collection, <America Sicho>. To achieve this, the study examines the aspects of affect Park In-hwan experienced during this period and how they influenced his epistemological perspectives. Affect is similar to emotions or feelings but is more immediate, based on the sensory reactions experienced by the body. It refers to instinctive, unconscious responses to particular situations—momentary, pre-linguistic reactions. These sensory responses, prior to awareness or cognition, are primarily bodily reactions and pre-experiential responses relying on past memory and learning. Affect is immediate yet collective and socially generated, suggesting that the body acts as a terrain for storing and recalling collective, socio-cultural, and political phenomena encountered by the subject. Examining <America Sicho> from the perspective of affect is particularly meaningful as these poems were written during Park In-hwan’s first visit to America. The immediate and direct sensations Park experienced in this unfamiliar environment reflect his body's primary responses. These vivid and intense sensations encapsulate the affect Park gained through his American experience. The journey provided Park with an opportunity to dramatically and distinctly experience the movement of affect. In confronting unfamiliarity, he underwent a transformation of senses, emotions, and consciousness. For Park In-hwan, who had endured the post-liberation chaos and the Korean War, traveling to America was both an exciting and escapist opportunity. Before arriving in America, his experiences crossing the Pacific reflect an affective drive for freedom and liberation from the anxiety and nihilism he had borne like a stigma. Upon reaching America, Park embraced its cultural phenomena without limitations or reservations, driven by a desire to understand the country fully within a short period. Initially, the culture of American cities caused confusion and discomfort for Park. However, as he interacted with its people and shared daily life, he began to perceive a different America than the one he had known. Eventually, he realized the duality of America—“chaos and order”—and, recognizing the differences between America and Korea, decided to return to his homeland. His mention of “happiness” at this point provides a glimpse into the affective impact of his American experience.
