This study aims to investigate pre-service elementary school teachers' perceptions on the use of children's literature during the English language class. For this, 25 participants were asked to complete a survey consisting of three open-ended questions about the perception of pre-service elementary school teachers on the effectiveness of using English children's literature, the difficulties in using English children's literature, and the competencies or qualities teachers should have in order to plan and implement lessons using English children's literature. The collected open-ended answers were read carefully by the researcher, divided into categories, and analysed based on key words. The results showed that, first, regarding the effectiveness of using English children's literature, the participants talk about interesting teaching materials, the effectiveness of English learning, and the ease of culture-related education. Second, the pre-service teachers participating in this study think that when teaching elementary English classes using English children's literature, teachers may have three difficulties: difficulties in selecting literary texts, difficulties in operating and preparing classes, and difficulties in understanding the characteristics of English children’s literature. Third, regarding the competencies that teachers must have in order to teach English classes using children's literature, the participants think that teachers need to improve their interest and understanding of children's literature, the abilities to identify learners' English levels, and teaching capabilities using children's literature. Based on findings, this study provides implications towards the use of English children’s literature and further research direction.
