대가야의 南齊 교섭과 ‘本國王’호의 의의

Dagaya's Negotiations with the Namje and the Meaning of the Bonkukwang(本國王)

이 글에서는 5세기의 국제정세 속에서 대가야가 어떻게 남제와 교섭할 수 있었는지 그리고 교섭 결과로 책봉된 ‘本國王’호가 대가야에 어떠한 의미가 있었는지를 검토하였다. 남제로부터 책봉 받은 보국장군 본국왕호를 근거로 금관국이 남제와 교섭했다고 파악하거나 최근의 발굴 성과를 근거로 안라가 남제와 교섭했을 것으로 추정되기도 하지만, 『남제서』의 가라국은 대가야로 파악된다. 대가야의 남제 교섭루트에 대해서는 다양한 견해가 있지만, 한반도에서 중국으로 가려면 백제 영역이었던 서해안을 경유해야 했다. 당시 대가야와 백제의 밀접한 관계를 고려하면 대가야는 백제의 도움을 받아 남제에 사신을 파견하였을 것이다. 대가야가 남제에 견사하여 책봉호를 받은 것은 대외적으로 성과를 거두었다고 할 수 있다. 내부적으로도 대가야의 성장·발전을 상징하는 의미가 있다. ‘본국왕’호는 대가야 세력권 내에서 활용되었을 가능성이 있지만, 대가야에만 한정되는 것이었다. 이를 근거로 대가야가 가야 제국의 대외 교섭권을 장악했다거나 가야 제국을 주도하였다고 파악하기는 어렵다. 즉 ‘본국왕’이라는 작호는 대가야 세력권을 벗어나 다른 가야 지역까지 영향력을 미칠 수는 없었다.

This article examines how Daegaya was able to negotiate with Namje in the international situation of the 5th century, and what the title of “Bonkukwang(本國王)” as a result of the negotiations meant to Daegaya. Although it is sometimes assumed that Geumgwanguk negotiated with Namje based on the title of “Bokukgukgun Bongukwang(輔國將軍 本國王)” by Namje, or that Anra negotiated with Namje based on recent excavations, Garaguk in “Namjeseo” is identified as Daegaya. There are varying opinions on Daegaya's negotiation route for the Namje, but the route from the Korean Peninsula to China was via the west coast, which was Baekje territory. Given the close relationship between Daegaya and Baekje at the time, it is likely that Daegaya sent envoys to the Namje with the help of Baekje. It can be said that Daegaya's external achievement of receiving the appointment title from Namje was a success. Internally, it also symbolizes the growth and development of Daegaya. The title of “Bonkukwang” may have been used within the sphere of influence of Daegaya, but it was limited to Daegaya. Based on this, it is difficult to understand that Daegaya dominated the foreign negotiations of the Gaya countries or led the Gaya countries. In other words, the title of “Bonkukwang” could not have influenced other Gaya regions beyond Daegaya's sphere of influence.
