The purpose of this study is to discuss the travel narrative and the completion of self-realization in order to reproduce the artist’s passion and impulse as shown in William Somerset Maugham’s The Moon and Sixpence. The protagonist of The Moon and Sixpence seeks to recover his lost self as an artist by expanding his travel space from London to Paris and then to Tahiti in the South Pacific. The male protagonist of this work develops relationships with three women. The three women stimulate the male protagonist’s artistic travel narrative and exert influence on his realization of artistic value and ultimately his completion of self-realization. In particular, the island of Tahiti, which has natural beauty and great natural power, and its indigenous women provide an environment in which the male protagonist can freely immerse himself in art, and provide a decisive influence on his realization of artistic value and completion of self. The male protagonist achieves self-growth and artistic perfection by aligning his artistry and self, giving up economic stability, overcoming realistic difficulties and limitations, and exploring his inner self. In conclusion, the male protagonist was able to complete artistic value and self-realization by reproducing the world of art and the real world from a unified perspective rather than a separate one.
