This paper explores key competencies in the 2022 revised English curriculum, highlighting its stronger focus on empathetic understanding and communication skills compared to the 2015 version. It emphasizes the benefits of narrative English education in fostering these skills and analyzes When You Trap a Tiger as an effective example. Empathetic understanding involves seeing the world from others' perspectives and acting accordingly, essential for communication and cooperation. Narratives, rich with relatable events and characters, enhance this ability by offering diverse viewpoints. When You Trap a Tiger illustrates this through Lily, a quiet Asian girl who learns about Korean tiger folktales and family stories from her grandmother and a magical tiger. The narrative helps Lily understand her family, reflect on herself, and embrace a fuller life. This work demonstrates how narratives cultivate empathy, tolerance, and deeper understanding, underscoring the importance of narrative-centered English education.
