In the graphic novel The Arrival, Shaun Tan powerfully depicts immigrants’ experiences in a foreign land through evocative illustrations and narratives, conveying messages about courage, familial love, diversity, and shared humanity. The work’s surreal and symbolic images effectively visualize immigrants’ complex inner world as they adapt to unfamiliar environments. Through engaging with these images, readers deeply empathize with the protagonist’s struggles, which can expand to understanding broader issues of discrimination and alienation faced by cultural minorities. This paper aims to illuminate the diverse aspects of aesthetic sensibility embodied in the work by meticulously analyzing the visual images, narrative structure, and the way characters and backgrounds are depicted in The Arrival. Furthermore, this study will explore how The Arrival can be utilized to stimulate learners’ aesthetic sensibility, broaden their understanding and empathy for others, and ultimately, examine how reading The Arrival can contribute to learners’ holistic growth and the cultivation of social sensibility.
