공감은 어느 때보다 중요한 가치이자 윤리적 주제가 되었다. 그만큼 많은 갈등이 발생하고 구조화되거나 일상화되고 반복되고 있다는 뜻이기도 하다. 다양한 이름의 혐오와 차별, 배제의 폭력 속에서 많은 이들이 신음하고 있다. 공감과 혐오는 동전의 양면처럼 다른 얼굴을 하고 있지만 본질적으로 하나의 몸을 가지고 있다. 오늘 우리가 살펴볼 공감이란 마냥 따뜻하고 친절한 단어가 아니다. 인류는 공감 능력 덕분에 타인을 배려하고 집단을 형성하여 번성하는 데 성공했다. 하지만 이 공감 때문에 무리를 나누고, 서로를 혐오하여 수많은 갈등이 일어나기도 한다. 공감이란 무엇일까? 이 물음에 답하기 위하여, 이 글에서는 공감에 관한진화생물학과 신경과학의 연구 결과를 살피고자 한다. 먼저 공감의 정의와 유사 감정에 대해 정리하며 공감의 특성을 살필 것이다. 이어서 공감의 특징을 정서적 공감과 인지적 공감의 측면에서 비교하고 검토할 것이다. 마지막으로 정서적 공감을 보완하는 대안으로서 사회적 공감에 대해 살피고 이를 통해 종교의 역할에 대해 생각해 보고자 한다.

Empathy has become more important than ever as a value and ethical topic. Without it so many conflicts have arisen, are structured, become commonplace, and are repeated. Many people are moaning in the violence of hate, discrimination, and exclusion by various names. Empathy and hate have different faces like both sides of a coin, but they essentially have one body. Empathy as we will see in this article is not just a warm and kind word. It is an ability that enables humanity to succeed by being considerate of others and forming groups to thrive. However, because of empathy, they divide up groups and hate each other, causing numerous conflicts. What is empathy? To answer this question, this article will examine the research results of evolutionary biology and neuroscience on empathy. First, we will examine the characteristics of empathy by organizing the definition of empathy and similar emotions. Next, we will compare and review the characteristics of empathy in terms of emotional empathy and cognitive empathy. Finally, as an alternative to complementing emotional empathy, I would like to examine social empathy and think about the role of religion through this.
