Expressions of gratitude are among the most frequently used speech acts in interpersonal interactions. Their rendering can vary depending on the context, with translators making different choices based on interpretation and judgment. This study examines the functions of gratitude expressions in four selected Korean films, analyzing and comparing general English subtitles with SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing). After categorizing the functions of gratitude expressions in the original Korean text, the study explores the translation strategies employed, highlighting differences between general English subtitles and SDH. The findings reveal that while literal translations are more common in general English subtitles, SDH often incorporates variations such as added intensifiers, honorifics, and supplementary descriptions. This reflects the unique characteristics of SDH, which aim to convey the speaker’s tone and vocal nuances through text to accommodate viewers who rely entirely on subtitles for auditory information.
