Examining the Role and Status of Interpreters during the U.S. Military Government Period through the 『Intelligence Reports of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division Stationed in Seoul』
This study analyzes the roles and activities of interpreters during the U.S. military administration period in Korea through the translated report “U.S. 7th Division Intelligence Report on Seoul” published by the Seoul Institute of History and Culture. First, interpreters during the U.S. military government period not only facilitated communication but also exerted influence in the policy-making and implementation processes. Second, activities of the interpreters reflect the social conflicts of the U.S. military government period. In the process of cooperating with the U.S. military, interpreters were often regarded as spies by local residents and became targets of social criticism. This suggests that interpreters were not merely neutral mediators but had to manage conflicting expectations and demands within complex power relations.
