The CONTAINER Schema as a Text: A Reissian Functionalist Analysis

DOI : 10.23903/kaited.2024.22.4.007

This research aims to apply the Reissian functionalist theory to the examination of a technical term 'The CONTAINER Schema' as a text example. Given (1) that the text-type-oriented theory of Katharina Reiss provides a useful methodology and (2) that the research on a technical term as a text needs due attention, this research selects ‘container’ in ‘The CONTAINER Schema’ as the source text and examines its semiotic and translational characteristics in the English-Korean translation (e.g., ‘그릇’ (geureut) vs. ‘용기’ (yonggi)). In the function-centered, text-type-oriented, and usage-based analysis result, it is clear that (1) ‘그릇’ is too culture-specific, context-specific, and purpose-specific to function as part of the target text and that (2) the translators’ native-word-oriented esthetic value prevents the target text from evoking the terminology-specific tone and discursivity. Consequently, ‘그릇’ is less effective in a Reissian sense while ‘용기’ can demonstrate major functions and properties. This research concludes that the Reissian theory provides not only wider applicability but also a higher vantage point in translation practice and research.
