이서구 소설 『눈물에 젖는 사람들』에 나타난 일제강점기 기생의 인식 양상 연구

Perceptions of Parasitism in Japanese Colonial Literature : Focusing on Lee Seo-koo’s novel, “People in Tears.”

이 연구는 극작가이자 소설가인 고범(孤帆) 이서구(1899-1981)의 소설 『눈물에 젖는 사람들』을 중심으로 당대 기생에 대한 대중의 인식을 살펴보고자 하는것에 목적이 있다. 이서구는 1927년 11월 24일부터 1928년 2월 17일까지 총 79회에 걸쳐 『매일신보』에 『눈물에 젖는 사람들』을 연재하였다. 삽화가는 토월회 출신이자 고려화회에서 안석주, 구본웅 등과 문하생으로 수업을 받은 바 있는 이승만(李承萬, 1903-1975)이 맡았다. 『눈물에 젖는 사람들』은 크게 두 개의 서사로 구분되는데, 첫 번째는 미국에서 신학을 공부하고 돌아온 주인공 ‘김용규’가 여동생 ‘김화숙’이 기생으로 살고있음을 알고 기생의 삶에서 벗어나게 해주는 내용이다. 두 번째는 ‘김용규’가 유학시절 ‘간도’로 이주한 자신의 가족들을 찾으러 가는 과정이다. ‘김용규’가 미국에 있는 동안 그의 가족들은 여러 차례 고난을 겪게 되는데, 그 과정에서 ‘김화숙’만 남고 모두 간도로 떠나게 된다. 이 연구는 두 개의 서사 중 첫 번째 서사를 중심으로 당대 ‘기생’이라는 존재에 대한 인식을 살펴보고자 한다. 문학, 특히 소설이란 지금 시대에서는 알 수 없는 지난 시대의 것들을 간접적으로 확인할 수 있는 표상이다. 『눈물에 젖는 사람들』은 일제강점기 조선의 기생에 대한 인식을 단적으로나마 엿볼 수 있는 작품이다. 이 작품을 통해 당대 기생이 사회적으로 어떤 상황에 놓여있는지를 살펴보고자 하는 것이 이 연구의 목적이라 할 수 있다.

This study aims to examine the public’s perception of Kisaeng at the time, focusing on the novel “People in Tears” by playwright and novelist Ko Beom (1899-1981). Lee serialized “People in Tears” in the Daily Shinbo for a total of 79 issues from November 24, 1927 to February 17, 1928. The illustrator was Lee Seung man (1903-1975), a native of Towolhoe and a student of Ahn Seok-joo, Koo Bon-woong, and others at the Goryeo Painting Society. “Tearful People is divided into two narratives, the first of which is about the protagonist Kim Yong-gyu, who returns from studying theology in the United States and realizes that his sister Kim Hwa-sook is living as a parasite and helps her to escape from her life of Kisaeng. The second is about Kim Yong-gyu’s search for his family, who moved to Gando when he was studying abroad. While Kim Yong-gyu is in the U.S., his family goes through several hardships, and in the process, they all leave for Gando except for Kim Hwa sook. This study focuses on the first of the two narratives to examine the perception of ‘Kisaeng’ at the time. Literature, especially fiction, is an indirect representation of the past that cannot be known in the present. “The Tearful People is a work that gives us a glimpse into the perception of Kisaeng in Joseon during the Japanese occupation. The purpose of this study is to examine the social situation of Kisaeng at the time through this work.
