현대 러시아 지정학에 대한 비판적 실재론적 이해

The Critical Realist Understanding of Contemporary Russian Geopolitics

본 연구의 목적은 현대 러시아 지정학의 전개에서 유라시아주의로의 수렴을 비판적 실재론의 관점에서 분석하는 것이다. 이 연구는 비판적 실재론을 통해 고전과 비판 지정학의 논쟁을 해소하고, 이를 바탕으로 러시아 지정학의 특성을 탐구하고자 한다. 러시아 지정적 실재에 대한 이해는 유라시아에서 발생하는 인과적 힘과 기제가 특정 조건에서 현실화하는 사건을 통해 이를 인식하는 방법에 기반한다. 키예프 공국 시기부터 형성된 공간적·사회적 기제를 역사적 사건을 통해 해석하는 시도는 서구주의, 유라시아주의, 사회주의, 국제주의 등 다양한 경향으로 나타났다. 이런 이론은 역사적 사건들의 규칙적 연쇄를 탐지하고, 이를 사유 속에 재구성한다는 점에서 일종의 가설이다. 소련해체 이후 다양한 시각을 종합한 유라시아주의가 경험적으로 큰 지지를 받고 있다. 그리고 고립주의 경향이 팽창주의보다 지정적 실재를 적합하게 설명하고 있다고 본다. 지정학에 대한 비판적 실재론적 접근은 러시아의 지정책 연구에서 사고의 폭을 넓히는 데 기여하지만, 시론적 논의에서는 지정학적 사건을 제한적으로 다룰 수밖에 없다는 한계가 있다. 향후 비판 실제론적 설명모델에 기반한 연구가 필요할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the convergence towards Eurasianism in the development of contemporary Russian geopolitics from the perspective of critical realism. This research aims to resolve the debate between classical and critical geopolitics through critical realism and, on this basis, explore the characteristics of Russian geopolitics. Understanding Russia’s geopolitical reality is based on recognizing causal forces and mechanisms occurring in Eurasia, which materialize under specific conditions. The attempt to interpret the spatial and social mechanisms formed since the Kievan Rus period through historical events has manifested in various trends such as Westernism, Eurasianism, Socialism, and Internationalism. These theories are considered hypotheses in that they detect the regular sequences of historical events and reconstruct them in thought. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Eurasianism, which synthesizes various perspectives, has gained significant empirical support. Moreover, it is believed that the tendency towards isolationism explains geopolitical reality more appropriately than expansionism. While a critical realist approach to geopolitics contributes to broadening the scope of thinking in the study of Russia’s geopolitical strategies, there is a limitation in that theoretical discussions can only address geopolitical events in a restricted manner. Future research based on critical realist explanatory models is needed.
