Veterinary Information Coverage by Korean Media: Accuracy, Accessibility, and Comprehensibility Compared

This study comprehensively assesses the accuracy, accessibility, and comprehensibility of veterinary information disseminated by major media outlets in Korea. Understanding how media present such information is crucial for ensuring informed decision-making among pet owners and the general public. The study analyzed and compared the characteristics of veterinary information coverage between newspaper media and television news media over the past three years. A content analysis was conducted on 300 news articles from selected media outlets, and a survey involving 1,000 members of the general public assessed their perceptions of veterinary information. Television news media were found to score higher in accessibility and comprehensibility compared to newspaper media, excelling in easy access and understanding through audiovisual materials. Both types of media demonstrated high accuracy. Survey responses highlighted a need to enhance the reliability, accessibility, and comprehensibility of veterinary information. They also revealed that mass media's presentation significantly impacts public accessibility and understanding. The findings suggest that steps to enhance coverage include reducing jargon, improving visuals, and ensuring transparent sourcing to empower pet owners with reliable information.
