Factors Affecting the Clinical Practice Experience of Dental Hygiene Students on Self-Efficacy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the self-efficacy of dental hygiene students through clinical practice experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted from September to October 2021, involving 135 participants. The survey included 10 general characteristic items and clinical practice-related characteristics, comprising 4 environmental factors, 3 infection control factors, 2 rule-related factors, 3 interpersonal relationship factors, 3 roles and activities factors, 3 clinical practice factors, and 3 clinical practice satisfaction factors. Data were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis, using SPSS version 22.0. Results: Significant correlations were found between clinical practice satisfaction and environmental factors (r = 0.515), infection control factors (r = 0.526), interpersonal relationships (r = 0.668), roles and activities (r = 0.603), and clinical practice factors (r = 0.693). Conversely, rules showed a weak and negative correlation with satisfaction (r = −0.026). Additionally, clinical practice satisfaction demonstrated significant correlations with academic achievement (r = 0.456), job satisfaction (r = 0.486), and self-efficacy (r = 0.536). Factors influencing self-efficacy were satisfaction with clinical practice (p = 0.032), academic achievement (p < 0.001), and job satisfaction (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results showed that the self-efficacy of dental hygiene students during clinical practice amidst the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly associated with their satisfaction with clinical practice, academic achievement, and job satisfaction. These results provide foundational data for enhancing the quality of clinical practice education and guidance in the future
