Study on the Standardization of Dental Hygiene Terminology (with a Focus on Select Courses)

Objectives: The objective of this study is to standardize terminology by organizing terms that are used interchangeably with different meanings, in order to create a foundational resource that supports the advancement of the dental hygiene field. Methods: Representative textbooks used as primary texts across 82 universities nationwide were selected for each subject. The study was conducted in six stages. From the indices of the selected textbooks, 1,042 from Public Oral Health, 679 terms from Oral Health Education, 262 from Oral Health Statistics, 760 from Preventive Dentistry, and 793 from Dental Prophylaxis were extracted, totaling 3,536 terms. Results: A total of 42 standardized terms were selected: 9 terms from Public Oral Health, Oral Health Statistics, and Oral Health Education; 13 from Preventive Dentistry; and 20 from Dental Prophylaxis. Conclusions: The recommended standardized terms should be used as references when writing textbooks to ensure the uniformity of terminology across the field. With consensus among educators, these standardized terms could also be applied to the development of national examination questions. Additionally, the process of standardizing terminology should continue to evolve to reflect changing times.
