Analysis of Research Trends in Korea on Elderly Oral Health Care by Caregivers and Nursing Home Employees: A Scoping Review

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the trends in domestic research on elderly oral health management by caregivers and nursing home employees through a scoping review. Methods: This study was conducted in five stages of a scoping review: 1) identifying the research question 2) identifying relevant studies 3) selecting studies 4) charting the data 5) collating, summarizing, and reporting results. Results: Research on oral health care for caregivers and nursing home employees has been consistently conducted each year since 2010. Among these studies, 15(62.5%) focused on caregivers, while 9(37.5%) focused on nursing home employees. Seven literature themes were derived from the study subjects. A number of studies were conducted in order of oral health management, recognition of oral health management, and education requirements, and more than one other study was reported each. Conclusions: This study is significant in that it explored the direction for research on oral health care education for caregivers. It serves as a valuable reference when planning research on elderly oral health for caregivers.
