Mediating Effects of Binge Drinking and Smoking in The Relationship Between Mental Health and Oral Health: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Data From The 2022 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the mediating effect of binge drinking and smoking on the relationship between mental health and oral health. Methods: This study used data from 2022, the first year of the 9th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, when both mental health screening tools were measured. Results: In participants with depression, binge drinking and smoking had a partial mediating effect on chewing function problems, meanwhile they had a complete mediating effect in those with generalized anxiety disorder. Binge drinking and smoking had a complete mediating effect on the cognitive state of oral health in those with depression and generalized anxiety disorder (p<0.05). Conclusions: Binge drinking and smoking have mediating effects on the relationship between mental health and oral health. Therefore, dental hygienists will need smoking cessation education and effective and continuous education programs related to binge drinking to maintain and promote oral health.
